How Takealot Slashed Fleet Costs by 12.75% with EV Charging Solutions

Updated: Jul 26

In the world of fleet management, cutting costs while going green is the holy grail. Takealot, South Africa's e-commerce giant, just proved it's possible. Working with Aeversa, they've started their transition in their delivery operations with electric trucks and smart EV charging systems.

The Challenge: Fuelling Efficiency in an Uncertain Market

Fleet managers know the struggle:

  • Skyrocketing fuel costs

  • Increasing pressure to achieve ESG goals

  • High maintenance costs for traditional vehicles

Takealot faced these issues head-on. With a massive last-mile network, they needed a solution that could handle 300+ km daily runs and fit tight middle mile schedules.

Enter Aeversa's EV Charging Solution

After extensive trials and number-crunching facilitated by Aeversa, Takealot took the plunge. In October 2023, they rolled out 11 JAC electric trucks in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Here's what happened:

  1. Lightning-Fast Implementation:

    1. DC fast chargers installed

    2. Vehicles commissioned

    3. Staff trained. All in just three months!

  2. Smart Energy Management:

    1. Off-peak charging

    2. Dynamic load balancing

    3. Driver training for efficiency

The Results: More Than Just Savings

  1. 12.75% Average Monthly TCO Savings From January to May 2024, Takealot's wallet got a serious break.

  2. Scaling Up = More Savings The more EVs, the cheaper the charging infrastructure per vehicle.

  3. Operational Efficiency Boost EVs crushed it on 140-150 km round trips.

  4. 39% Drop in Energy Use Per Kilometer Thanks to Aeversa's smart EV software and dynamic load management.

  5. 250% Fewer Low Battery Events Proving Aeversa's EV training works in real-world conditions.

  6. Exceeding Expectations The program outperformed initial goals, showing the power of EV fleet management.

What's Next? Solar-Powered EV Charging Stations

Takealot isn't stopping here. They're exploring solar power for their EV charging stations, aiming to supply up to 60%-70% of their fleet's energy needs from the sun.

Reando Potgieter, COO of Aeversa, says: "We're proud to help Takealot lead the charge in sustainable logistics. Our EV charging solutions prove that going green can also mean savings"
